Impoverished women, orphans and disabled people sometimes have no way out. We work together with local churches to identify those in need and then to teach them how to care for an animal. We then provide them with a pregnant female, who can provide young for them. In return, they bring back the first born young to the local church, who can then give out the animal to another as a revolving loan. We can fight the karamoja famine and win. Donate HERE to provide a goat kid to a little kid!
Often capacity building is the main hindrance that keeps people from excelling and from prospering. Sharing management techniques, preventative strategies and treatment guidelines, we help livestock keepers, Community Animal Health Workers, Poultry farmers and Bee-Keepers to maintain their herds, flocks and colonies to increase their production. This can then improve both the family income and the family diet. This resiliency will also help them to fight the karamoja famine.
In recent years, we have developed some expertise in Animal Product Value Addition. We have been training communities on making of traditional Karamojong milk products (Amerinyang and Angodic), using improved hygienic techniques. We also have been making the traditional, high protein, concentrated food, called Emuna. It is a favorite in Karamojong ceremonies.
Traditional Leather tanning making of leather products (Abwo, etc.) are also part of the value addition trainings that we conduct for the communities. By Adding Value to these traditional livestock products, we see a great advancement in the livestock development of the region.
We have been the lead organisation in the region for vaccinating against poultry diseases. Prevention is so much better than treatments!! Every fall, from August to October, we set up vaccination points for community groups. The people are very willing to pay the price for the vaccine, as it is quite effective. livestock development can succeed when the barriers to adoption are conquered.
Providing quality veterinary medicines to farmers and herdsmen allows them to care for their animals and prevent livestock losses. This vet drug shop provides a sustainable way of reaching out to the communities and empowering them to be self reliant. This is an essential step in livestock development in Karamoja.
