Conservation and Creation Care. We live and work in Karamoja, Uganda. What an amazing place this is! An Arid-Semi-Arid dryland, yet with jagged, rugged mountains dotted around the area. Forests filled with natural beauty and indigenous trees, animals and plants. But, it may not remain amazing for long. We have so many threats to our ecosystem here, and so many challenges in our communities. When drought, famine and poverty claim a village, their only resort is to seek survival by extracting or removing resources from their environment: cutting trees to sell for firewood, or making charcoal; hunting wild animals in the game reserve, to feed your family, quarrying stones and gold or sending children to mine gold deep down in narrow mine shafts. Many try to farm this dryland, but now, our climate is changing, and the rains are no longer reliable. We have severe droughts, or sudden floods, both destroying the seeds that we struggled to plant.
But we have a plan! We see hope in a tree. We see life in our soils and strength in our community cooperation. We can make a difference when we come together, dig our gardens, plant wisely, help each other learn, and take time to pray and seek wisdom from the one who created this world for us. So we plant trees, we teach environmental conservation, and we learn together the wisdom of our elders who understand the balance of receiving from our land, but also giving back. We learn how to graze our animals, leaving enough grass for it to recover before we come back again. We learn how to cut firewood without killing trees, and how to help trees to grow back after they have been cut.
Herbal Medicine Development. The leaves of the trees are for the healing of the nations. There is great potential in the herbal medicines of Karamoja. Our traditional healers know which trees and plants can cure our sicknesses, and how to prepare the various formulations, both for ourselves and our animals. As we plant more of these highly valued plants around our homes, they are easily available for medicinal purposes and can be accessed at any time, without extra costs. If you would like to help us to promote the Karamojong people and develop these herbal medicine into commercial medicines, CLIDE HERE.
But we can do more! Our herbal medicines are really working well! We have over 200 viable formulation, but we have chosen the to 20. Now we are developing them into commercial products to sell on the market. We have a future in our Trees! May God give us grace as we move to save our people, and to save our planet. :)
Providing Quality Drinking Water Sources. The people of Karamoja live in a dry and dusty land, where water sources are few and far between. For the sake of maintaining health and hygiene, we need to have wells that the people can access, to pump water for their families. We have been blessed to have a friend who is actively helping us to raise funds for drilling boreholes and repairing those that are no long er working.
